A tribe called quest says their making a come back.
Im interested to see what they send off into the air waves because as we all know Hip Hop has changed alot since they cut their last few singles. The change from underground to commercial hips hop has become one of my most bitter sweet contemplations. Had it not been for the explosion I would never know hip hop today and that my friends would have been lyfe altering, as I watched hip hop grow and mature I became indifferent towards her. She wore a different suit and became cooperate in what seemed like overnight. IMO that’s when all the trouble started. The change for me was devastating and I kicked and screamed my way into acceptance of her new nose (cosmetic surgery). After all, I was in love and sometimes when we love we accept flaws.
Money, replaced the love for the music and Hip Hop started a new love affair with pop culture, I guess she was flattered by the offers of ice, fancy cars, and easy women I never faulted her for that because she always seem to give me something that restored my faith in her magic. Some say hip hop is dead but I disagree. Correction people, Hip Hop has been corrupted by money, but dead no way. Heads fail to realize that BUSINESS will always be bigger then show and without commercial hip hop the genre of music could have easily died due to the lack of exposure, (somewhere in a broken down studio in NY). When I converse with other hardcore fans they get upset at my last statement (to bad, Im right!), they honestly believe that Hip Hop is immortal and would have still existed without exposure but without exposure she would have never had a chance to inspire, and without inspiration there would be no music.
So how as true fans do we solve our dilemma? The simple fact is there’s little we can do to stop what has already been started. The music, the concept, has matured with the times and hip hop has always been a mirror showing us the good, bad, and ugly side of urban lyfe and culture. Old heads HAVE to forget the mind frame of FAN and realize they are now the CONSUMER. What you buy will dictate what you now hear. I doest start with just buying music, hip hop is so much more then what we hear, its a lyfe style for many peeps. The negative things that are glorified such as, guns, drugs, raunchy sexuality, and silly dance moves are bought and sold with hip hop endorsements. The more crap we buy the easier it is for cooperate America to stereotype and exploit us. If you buy crap and it works, they will continue to market us tastelessly. As a lover of old school hip hop I feel it is my job, better yet my duty, to support positive images. I stay down for the cause, I keep her (hip hop) alive in my heart so that up and coming Emcees with substance can still have a place in the lime light. After all, shes done so much for me I could never leave her or reject her when shes knocking at my door.
New reader here …
Definitely looking forward to ATCQ coming back … but like you, I’m curious to see what they come up with given what the game is like now. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
What’s up with Phife’s health, though. Last I heard it wasn’t too good.
