Sand vs Pearls

A recently divorced daughter and her mother were walking along the beach one day, the daughter seemed very upset and bitter, she was pouring her heart out to her mother about how angry  she was. Her divorce had ended badly and her husband had treated her terriably towards the ending of their marriage. She began telling her mother how she planned to get revenge on the ex husband somday as payment for all the changes he’d  put her through. The mother listened to her daughter vent quietly and the expression on her face seemed to grow more and more concerned as the daughter went on and on about her pain.

Suddenly the mother stopped walking and instructed her daughter to lean over and grab two fists full of sand, she then instructed her daughter to not let go of the sand no matter what the circumstances were. The daughter was very confused by her mothers instructions but didnt want to seem disrespectful so she reluctantly obeyed the directions. They continued to walk slowly and the mother intently listened to her poor childs painful experiences, the sun began to set and the mother stopped along the beach again and watched it melt into the sea.  As the moon began to rise, the mother finally spoke to her daughter and said ” my child, I feel so bad that your husband put you through all this, theres nothing I want more for you then to find happiness in your life with someone who will treat you well and make you happy.” Look arcoss the ocean my child ” said the mother, “and tell me what you see.” The daughter looked up and suddenly realized that the view of the ocean from where they were standing at was filled with hundreds of clams, each one had a tiny glowing pearl inside of it. The mass of clams with pearls was so beautiful and bright that it lit up a small section of the sea. The mother then turned to the daughter and said ” my child, each pearl has enough value to bring you and my grandchildren enough money to ensure that you will be happy and secure for a lifetime all you have to do is reach down into the water and grab as many as you need to make it happen.” The daughter was excitedly rushed to the water to collect her fill of pearls for her family. Suddely she realized that in each palm she still clutched a fist full of soft white sand that her mother had instructed her to not let go under any circumstances. The daughter turned to her mother and exclaimed. “Mother, how will I be able to grab pearls if I dont let go of the sand?” The mother looked up at her daughter, smiled and said “you’re correct my child you’ll never be able to gain anything unless you let go.” release the sand that holds no value to you from your hands so that you may retrieve the pearls.”

The moral- In order for us to gain the things we need we must be willing to let go of thing things we dont.
